Recipe for evening-ruining rage: expose subject to otherwise sane colleague defending his homophobia via hypocritical non-logic, then top off with official newsletter that’s riddled with faulty punctuation and questionable grammar for the third time in a row, proving that the new person in charge of spell checking apparently doesn’t control the written word in her own language. Sprinkle with subject’s knowledge that she is now likely to be labeled an anomaly (again) and that the third offer for free spell-checking of newsletter will probably just be ignored/rejected (again).
And why the hell does Shiny New Female Watson lose her army past? It’s not like we don’t have a war going on in Afghanistan right now or anything. What gives?
Link here. Let the WTF’s begin. Starting with mine.
See at first I was going to give it a chance. Nope. Not now. Not at all.
ONE CHANCE, AMERICA
I WAS GIVING YOU ONE CHANCE
YOU JUST FUCKING BLEW IT
WHAT THE FUCK AMERICA
What is wrong with you
why am i so against this shit
If it’s a) Modern, b) in America, and c) gender-flips the Watson… is it still Sherlock Holmes? Instead of, say, A Random Detective Show?
Seriously. I get the US possibly trying to cash in on the success of the Guy Richy movies and BBC!Sherlock, but it would probably be better if they marketed this as a stand-alone show and, you know, not annoy the shit out of most of the combined fandom. Because right now this just feels like “We’re doing Sherlock Holmes, but IN EAGLELAND! And with a female Watson! Because a modern re-imagining has already been done and we need to be edgy and radical somehow! But not too radical, so we gender-flipped Watson instead of Holmes. Can’t have a female main character in a detective series.”
Okay, maybe that last bit was rambling slightly off topic… But really. Why gender-flip Watson? And if you decide to do so, why not do it to Holmes instead? Or do them both in the hopes of gaining a female perspective on the situations they keep landing themselves in? Looking at BBC!Sherlock it already is awkward enough being the biggest brainmachine on earth/rooming with that. Does that become more difficult when both are female?
And what does Female!Watson do to the whole dynamic between the two? Two non-student blokes Being Very Close and living in the same house was apparently normal enough in the olden days. Two non-student blokes Being Very Close and living in the same house causes some raised eyebrows and assumptions in modern times (Still not his date?). Non-student single man and non-student single lady Being Very Close and living in the same house in modern times? Tricky, tricky…
I love me some Holmes/Watson as much as the next fangirl, but… I do believe it’s something best left in fandom. Every incarnation of these stories can tease with it, and fandom will eternally keep flailing for more of it, but I personally believe that the moment it becomes canon, it will lose its charm. I think these two characters work so well together because they’re not obviously romantically involved. They can get into fights, but they have enough distance between them that everything can be worked out. A romantic relationship opens up a whole new portal for Issues…
But maybe that’s just me being uncomfortable with romance in general. But I’d still be happier to see either both of them gender-flipped, or to have it happen to Sherlock.
And for this not to be set on ‘murika, but I’ll go ahead and admit that’s something of a knee-jerk reaction from my side. Good stuff can happen outside of the US, too, and you can’t tell me the whole of the American population is too stupid to understand this.
Oh balls this turned a bit longer than I thought it would be…
